S
cholarships for students participating in the Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Congressional Internship Program are generously donated each year by supporters of the program. Donations allow students to experience opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Most interns who work in Washington, D.C. are unpaid. This makes it nearly impossible for many deserving students to learn about public policy. The cost of living in Washington, D.C. is 15-20% higher than the average Texas city. This cost, when combined with tuition and fees is prohibitive to many TAMU students.

However, each congressional office that participates in our program pays their intern a $500 monthly salary. Moreover, because our students receive monetary payment for their services, there is a general feeling of obligation, respect and service.

Students receive a $2,500 scholarship to help defray transportation, housing and other costs associated with working in Washington, D.C.

Support Opportunities

The Texas A&M Foundation makes two types of donations possible to support The Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Congressional Internship Program: endowed and non-endowed.

Endowments are permanent gifts that are invested in-perpetuity. There is a $25,000 minimum donation or pledge (payable over a 5 year period) to create an endowment. The annual pay-out from an endowment is approximately 5% of the market value of the endowment. Any investment growth and/or income greater than the 5% pay-out is placed back into the principal of an endowment, hedging for inflation and unfavorable market conditions. The original principal of the endowment is never used for pay-out. An endowment is likely to grow over time, therefore the payout from the endowment will also grow over time.

An endowment of $7,000 would support three internships per year, funding one student each semester continuously for the life of the program. To establish an endowment that yields $7,000, a gift of $140,000 would be required based on the 5% endowment pay-out.

Non-Endowed gifts are donations that are used in the year in which they are donated to sponsor one or more students interning in Washington. Any non-endowed gift, regardless of amount, is welcomed and appreciated.

To support one student for one year, or three semesters, a $7,000 gift is required. Fall and Spring interns receive a $2500 scholarship and Summer students receive a $2,000 scholarship. A $7,000 gift will support a Fall, Summer, and Spring student or will provide partial scholarship support for our interns.

Gifts of cash, appreciated stock, or appreciated real estate can be accepted for both endowed and non-endowed gifts.
